Art conservation and restoration in Hamburg

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg lies at the mouth of the Alster and Bille rivers into the Elbe. Hamburg borders Schleswig-Holstein in the north and Lower Saxony in the south.
There are about 60 museums in the Hanseatic city: state museums as well as numerous private museums and collections. The Kunsthalle and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, the Deichtorhallen and the Bucerius Kunst Forum characterise the exhibition landscape.

The heavy bombardments during the Second World War caused Hamburg to lose much of its historical fabric. Today, Hamburg's sights include the Chile House, the Church of St. Michael better known as the "Michel", the Hamburg Music Hall, the so-called Laeiszhalle and the future Elbphilharmonie in HafenCity.

The Speicherstadt is on the German nomination list for UNESCO World Heritage. This warehouse ensemble, built at the end of the 19th century in place of baroque predecessor buildings, is unique in its unity.
