Education and Studies - Restoration, Art and Historic Preservation

Overview of universities of applied sciences, studies, training and further education

Here you will find further information on education, advanced training, further education, studies, distance learning, universities of applied sciences, universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as worldwide educational offers and overviews of Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes.

Where can you study art conservation or restoration?

Restoration can be studied at various colleges and universities around the world. However, the exact study programs and specializations may vary depending on the university and country.

What are the admission requirements?
Depending on the university, admission requirements for the course vary, e.g. school-leaving certificate with entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or a passed master craftsman's examination. Most training institutions require a one-year subject-related pre-study internship in a restoration workshop in a museum, in the preservation of historical monuments, in a private company or with a recognized restorer. In addition, an aptitude test and, in some cases, a portfolio, e.g. with drawings or work samples, must be submitted.

How long does the course take?
The course lasts between three and six years, depending on the type of training: A Bachelor's degree in Restoration usually takes three years and leads to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Restoration. A Master's degree course in Restoration requires a further two to three years and leads to a Master of Arts (M.A.) or Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Restoration.

Below is a summary of the Bachelor (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) degree courses in Conservation / Restoration and the universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The latest information on admission requirements and degree programs can be found on the websites of the individual universities.
